The University of Mumbai (known earlier as the University of Bombay) is one of the oldest and premier Universities in India.
It was established in 1857 consequent upon “Wood’s Education Dispatch”, and it is one of the first three Universities in India. As a sequel to the change in the name of the city from Bombay to Mumbai, the name of the University has been changed from “University of Bombay” to “The University of Mumbai”, vide notification issued by the Government of Maharashtra and published in the Government Gazette dated 4th September 1996. The University was accorded 5-star status in 2001 & ‘A’ grade status in April 2012 by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

The University of Mumbai is one of the largest universities in the world. As of 2013, the university had 711 affiliated colleges. Ratan Tata is the appointed head of the advisory council.

A unique of its kind, currently the University has 56 Departments, 12 specialized Centres, 781 Affiliated Colleges, 2 main Campuses, 2 sub Campuses, 2 Model Colleges, and the ‘School of Engineering and Applied Sciences’ at Kalyan as the University’s own Engineering College. It has perhaps the largest geographical area under its jurisdiction from Thane district to Sindhudurg district, a spread of more than 600 km.

University of Mumbai, popularly known as Mumbai University, is one of the oldest and premier universities in India. It is recognised by the UGC and accredited with an ‘A++’ grade by the NAAC. Mumbai University has been ranked 45th among the top universities in India by NIRF Ranking 2022. MU has two main campuses- Vidyanagri & Fort and three sub-campuses at Ratnagiri, Thale, and Kalyan. The university has 56 Departments, 12 specialized Centres, 781+ Affiliated Colleges.

Mumbai University offers more than 200 UG, PG, and Doctoral, PG Diploma, and Certificate courses under the faculties of Arts, Commerce, Science, Technology, Law, Management, and Fine Arts. Apart from regular courses, it also offers Distance Learning programs from its Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL Mumbai University). Mumbai University admission is offered on the basis of merit or scores obtained in the entrance examinations. Candidates seeking admission to popular courses such as B.Tech/B.Pharm/B.Text programs need to have a valid score in the MHT CET entrance examination.

During Mumbai University Placements 2021, 2824 students out of 3429 graduating students were placed. The median salary stood at INR 12 LPA. Tata Consultancy Services, Deloitte, Wipro, Capgemini, Cognizant, Wipro, HDFC Bank, Morgan Stanley etc are the prominent recruiters of Mumbai University.

Accredited by NAAC, Mumbai University has received numerous rankings over the years from national and international bodies. University of Mumbai is ranked 45 under the ‘University’ category, 81 under the ‘Overall’ category by the NIRF Rankings 2022.

A total of 781 colleges are affiliated to this University. Some of the colleges affiliated to the University performed well in rankings published by Outlook India. Dwarkadas J.Sanghvi College Of Engineering(SVKM’s) was ranked 31 by Outlook India and ranked 195 by NIRF. At the international level, Mumbai University has been ranked 1001-1200 by the US World University Ranking. It has also been ranked at 1001+ by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021.
